| | 2010-01-26 Benelux IT Outsourcing 2010 |
| | Performance & Outlook
While the economy is slowly starting to recover after the financial crisis and the ensuing recession, Benelux companies generally are still careful with their spending. This makes IT units in Benelux companies face pressures that are inherently in conflict with each other. On the one hand they are asked to reduce or keep a lid on new IT investments and on the other hand they are expected to help making the company operate more efficiently and enable the company to get more business with the help of new and innovative IT solutions. It is thus not surprising that there is a renewed interest to discuss the merits of outsourcing in the media and in the companies as a way to reconcile this dilemma. The question is what effect this interest and discussions have on the companies’ current actual use of outsourcing and their immediate plans.
The report maps out large Nordic companies’ outsourcing plans, priorities and success. This entails looking at such areas as how the spending on outsourcing in relation to total IT spending is expected to change in 2010, what the most important outsourcing goals currently are and how well these goals have been reached in the past.

| | Performance & Outlook
As the insecurity in the economic outlook continues, IT units in Nordic companies are facing two sets of pressure that are inherently in conflict with each other; on the one hand they are asked to reduce or keep a lid on new IT investments and on the other hand they are expected to help making the company more lean and run more efficiently with the help of new IT solutions. It is thus not surprising that there is a renewed interest to discuss the merits of outsourcing in the media and in the companies as a way to reconcile this dilemma. It is therefore interesting to look into the effect of this interest and discussions on the companies’ current actual use of outsourcing and their immediate plans.

| | 2009-11-15 Benelux Healthcare IT Costs 2009-2011 |
| | Large healthcare companies’ budgets & forecasts
The economic recession has squeezed many companies in the Benelux healthcare sector between the pressures of reducing costs and an unchanged or even higher level of demand for their services. It is clear that information technology could have an important role in solving this dilemma. While there are many signs that the end of the economic recession is in sight, it is still far from apparent how fast the economy will recover and how strong the rebound will be. Also, the risk that the economy will start to go into reverse again is still present. In light of this, it is interesting to look at the current state of IT spending in Benelux healthcare companies’ and how the spending is expected to develop during the next two years.
Waagstein Research’s report Benelux Healthcare IT Costs 2009-2011 maps out both current IT costs in Benelux healthcare companies as well as the trends. In the report the IT costs levels as well as the allocation of spending is described and analysed. Both the allocation on IT resources (hardware, software, staff etc.) and on IT functions (infrastructure, ERP etc.) is presented. Furthermore, Benelux healthcare companies’ perception of the potential for cost-savings in different IT function areas is reported.

| | 2009-10-30 Benelux IT Organisation 2009-2010 |
| | Effective governance models
The strategic choices a company makes about the IT governance structure of its IT function is a key determinant of the success of the IT function in providing value to the organisation it is charged with supporting. This is because those choices create the environment in which the IT function must operate. With the wrong strategic decisions on IT governance, for example on what IT funding model to use, even an exceptionally competent IT management will have to struggle to succeed in creating value.
The report maps out what key decisions Benelux companies have made concerning the governance of their IT function. This entails looking at what IT funding models they have chosen, how decision rights on IT strategy and direction have been allocated and how successful the methods and models they have chosen have been in meeting key objectives.

| | 2009-09-25 Nordic IT & Telecom Costs 2009-2011 |
| | Large Nordic companies’ budgets & forecasts
There are many signs that the end of the economic recession is in sight. However, it is still far from clear how fast the economy will recover and how strong the rebound will be. Also, the risk that the economy will start to go into reverse again is still present. This puts Nordic companies in a dilemma as to how to balance continued cost savings in the event of only slow growth or even continued recession and the need to be prepared to be able to take advantage of strong demand in case of a quick economic rebound. The question is therefore how Nordic companies’ IT spending will develop during the next two years in light of this.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic IT & Telecom Costs 2009-2011 maps out the IT costs and investments of Nordic companies in 2009 to 2011. In the report the IT costs levels as well as the allocation of spending is described and analysed. Both the allocation on IT resources (hardware, software, personnel etc.) and on IT functions (infrastructure, ERP etc.) is presented. Furthermore, Nordic companies’ telecom budgets and forecasts are presented with key ratios such as telecom spending per employee and share of turnover.

| | 2009-07-01 New report: Benelux IT Costs 2009-2010 |
| | Large companies’ budgets & forecasts
The financial crisis and the resulting economic recession is creating a high level of uncertainty for Benelux companies as there are no credible forecasts of the duration of the downturn and how fast the recovery will take place. The recession is however bound to continue to impact on the IT spending in the companies in the short- to medium-term future. The question is how large the impact on IT costs will be and how the IT spending will develop in comparison with other key figures such as turnover and number of IT users.
Benelux IT Costs - Large companies’ budgets & forecasts maps out both current IT costs in Benelux companies as well as the trends. In the report the IT costs levels as well as the allocation of spending is described and analysed. | | 2009-04-15 New report: Managing Cost Savings |
| | Nordic best IT practices 2009
While the IT unit may be challenged to reduce its own costs, there is a growing realisation that the effectiveness of IT can affect a company’s overall cost position and strategically increasing the spending on information technology can drive even greater costs out of other parts of the business. For example, automating routine and manual processes (e.g. the processing of insurance claims), reduces overall business costs.
Although spending on IT often only makes up a small share of the total company costs, senior non-IT executives frequently turn their attention to IT budgets for substantial cost saving contributions. However, in many cases, IT delivers more value to a company by creating new efficiencies in the business operations than any savings gained from traditional cost cutting can generate.
Managing Cost Savings – Nordic best IT practices 2009 maps out major aspects of IT-related cost savings in large Nordic companies. This entails looking at such areas as how costs can be reduced within the IT unit as well as how companies use IT to save business costs. This report will give you valuable insight into how large Nordic companies handle IT cost-saving requirements in the economic downturn.

| | 2009-02-01 New report: Nordic IT Investments 2009 |
| | Investment evaluation and focus
The financial crisis and the ensuing recession are important events forcing Nordic companies’ to become more efficient and reassess their current methods, strategies and processes in order to survive and prosper in a difficult economic environment. An important component of this reassessment is to improve the methods of evaluating new investments; in order to ensure that they are profitable and are the best among the possible choices. The evaluation of investments in information technology has in the past often lagged behind the evaluation of investments in other areas; in terms of sophistication and accuracy of the methods used. The economic downturn is likely to increase the pressure on IT management to ensure that they improve the evaluation of their IT investments.
One of the main purposes of this report is to map out Nordic companies’ evaluation of their IT investments. This entails looking at such areas as how they value the overall usefulness of the evaluation techniques they use for assessing new IT investment proposals; and ranking the value of these techniques in terms of how useful they are for identifying both tangible and intangible benefits.

| | 2008-10-20 New report: Nordic IT Outsourcing Vendors |
| | Global - Local - Offshore 2008/2009
The Nordic outsourcing market faces a new market situation due to the shift in the economy which sparks an array of changes such as consolidation, specialisation and new delivery models. Simultaneously new international players are becoming stronger and more active on the market. For the buyer of outsourcing services, this translates into more and better opportunities but also a more complex situation where he or she needs to be increasingly knowledgeable of the available outsourcing vendors, services, technologies and vendor management methods in order to become a successful buyer of outsourcing services.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic IT Outsourcing Vendors is designed to assist Nordic companies in identifying the outsourcing provider candidates that best can meet their service requirements. This is chiefly done by giving profiles of leading vendors of outsourcing services in the Nordics. The vendor profiles cover several areas, most notably services offered, organisation and financial stability. The report also outlines methods for successfully selecting and managing outsourcing vendors. Furthermore, a broad picture of the state of outsourcing in the Nordics is given. |

| | 2008-09-15 New report: Effective Information Security Spending |
| | Large Nordic companies 2008-2009
The rationale for most investments a company makes is simple; the investment should increase revenue and/or reduce company costs. However, when information security is concerned, the picture is typically much more complicated. The ‘return’ on information security investments is the possible avoidance of future costs in the form of bad publicity, lost opportunities etc. Putting a value on information security investments is therefore fraught with difficulties. Reducing the information security risk to zero is impossible because it would necessitate an infinite number of resources. The difficulty, therefore, lies not only in trying to predict current and future risk; but also in deciding what level of risk the company is willing to accept.
The main purpose of this report is to map out major aspects relating to costs and effectiveness of information security measures in large Nordic companies. This entails looking at such areas as how much is spent on information security in relation to total IT costs, confidence in current protection measures and plans for improving the protection. |
| |
| | 2008-05-30 New report: Optimising ERP Value & Spending |
| | Large Nordic companies 2008-2009
The initial investment in an ERP system is only one part of the overall investment made during the life-time of the ERP system. Much of the total life-time costs of an ERP system is made later in the life-cycle, such as upgrades, customisations and user training. It is therefore of vital importance to consider how to optimise this ongoing spending and keep improving the value derived from it.
The main purpose of this report is to map out major value and cost aspects relating to ERP systems in large Nordic companies. This entails looking at such areas as how much is spent on ERP in relation to total IT costs, satisfaction with costs and strategies for improving the benefits derived from the ERP system. |
| |
| | 2008-04-20 New report: IT Resources Spending – Allocation & Trends |
| | Large Nordic companies 2008-2009
It is not only absolute levels of IT spending that are changing in Nordic companies. In response to changes in prices of different IT resources, new technologies and other trends the companies are also reallocating their IT budgets, shifting spending from one IT resource area to another.
Waagstein Research’s report IT Resources Spending - Allocation & Trends 2008-2009 maps out the current IT resource spending allocation and trends in Nordic companies. In the report the allocation on IT resources (hardware, software, staff etc) is shown. Furthermore, both Nordic companies’ salaries for different types of IT staff and fees paid for different types of IT consulting services are presented and compared. In addition to this the report looks at the total costs for stationary and laptop PCs. |

| | 2008-02-20 New report: Optimising IT Cost Control 2008 |
| | Large Nordic Companies
The key to achieve low IT costs in combination with high IT value is to implement strict measures of IT cost control and quality assurance. In order to succeed it is vital to understand what methods are available and used successfully by other companies as well as how to go about implementing them.
Waagstein Research’s report Optimising IT Cost Control 2008 offers a comprehensive review and explanation of a large number of effective IT cost control and quality assurance measures. A detailed overview of the extent to which these are used by Nordic companies is also offered. |
| |
| | 2008-01-17 New report: Nordic IT Investments 2008 |
| | Valuing the return on IT investments
Nordic companies are increasingly shifting the focus of their information technology investments from helping to reduce company costs to supporting increased revenue generation. While the benefits of investments aimed at reducing IT and business operations costs are often tangible and fairly easy to calculate it is much more difficult to measure the often intangible values of IT investments aimed at increasing company revenue. At the same time top managers are becoming less and less willing to approve investments where the returns are not quantified or reasonably predictable.
One of the main purposes of this report is to map out Nordic companies’ valuing of benefits derived from IT investments. This entails looking at such areas as how intangible benefits are measured and what the satisfaction is with the investment returns.
Another important objective of the report is to look at Nordic companies investment focus.

| | 2007-11-23 New report: IT & Telecom Costs 2007-2009 |
| | Large Nordic companies’ budgets & forecasts
Despite increasing IT spending in the past few years, the IT costs ratios in Nordic companies have followed a downward trend because other key figures such as turnover and number of IT users have increased at faster rates. The question is whether or not IT spending will start to overtake the latter or continue increasing at slower rates. Another important issue is what will happen with the IT spending when and if there is an economic downturn in the next coming years.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic IT & Telecom Costs 2007-2009 maps out the IT costs and investments of Nordic companies in 2007 to 2009. |

| | 2007-10-16 New report: Nordic IT Organisation 2007 |
| | SOA and Business-IT Alignment
SOA or Service-Oriented Architecture has been promoted as an important vehicle to improve business-IT alignment. SOA is a collection of services that communicate with each other. A service is a coherent block of functionality that represents a distinct function or activity within the business. SOA is thought to promote business-IT alignment for several reasons. One reason is better ability for IT to adapt to the changing needs of business, because SOA services can easily and quickly be organised and reorganised into new end-to-end solutions, reducing the risk of misalignment. Probably the most important reason however, is that since services are represented in high-level business terms, IT executives are encouraged to think in terms of business functions rather than IT functions.
The report maps out Nordic companies’ approach to improving the alignment of business and IT in general and the use of SOA to do this in particular. This entails looking at such areas as the relative importance of different methods for improving alignment and the impact of SOA on
success with various IT goals. Furthermore, the report also looks at the key success factors for adopting a SOA strategy and the obstacles to implementing it. |

| | 2007-08-22 New report: Nordic IT Outsourcing 2007 |
| | Managing outsourcing relationships
While most companies typically invest considerable time and efforts in finding the most suitable outsourcing supplier to their needs, many of them spend little or no time thinking about how they will manage the relationship. However, the inability to build and manage relationships is a major cause of failure to reach the intended benefits of outsourcing. While managing a single vendor can be challenging, the complexity increases with the number of vendors. Companies with a best-of-breed outsourcing strategy therefore need to spend even more time and effort in structuring and managing the outsourcing relationships in order to maximise the chances of success.
The report maps out Nordic companies’ approach to managing both outsourcing relationships in general and multiple-vendors in specific. This entails looking at such areas as who in the company is in charge of managing the relationships, use of guidelines, training etc.
Furthermore, the report looks at outsourcing contract length and its impact on success as well as outsourcing prevalence and trends among Nordic companies. |

| | 2007-06-15 New report: Are Business Managers Happy With IT? |
| | Satisfaction and priorities 2007
While performing regular surveys of end-user satisfaction with the IT operations of the company, such as satisfaction with help-desk and response times, is important, it is arguably even more important to look a the satisfaction of business managers with more strategic issues and the value created by the IT unit for the business operations. It is also essential to look at what issues business managers put most priority on as funds are always limited and must therefore be allocated to where they create the most value. When surveying business managers it is also important to ask for feedback and ideas on how to improve the situation as they often have insights that IT management and staff lack.
The report maps out the value contributed by IT units in large Nordic companies to their respective business units. This entails looking at the business managers’ satisfaction with strategic IT issues in their company as well as their priorities. Furthermore, the report looks at reasons behind the business managers’ dissatisfaction and their ideas on how to improve the situation. |

| | 2007-04-05 India IT Services Executive Report 2007 Published by Waagstein Research and Zagada Institute |
| | The report gives strategic city-by-city talent analysis, IT Engineer graduation stock and graduation density forecasts, service supplier profiling, real estate costs, the latest tax increase and incentive assessment, infrastructure, communication and teledendity analysis, and quality of life rating. The report finds that India’s 450,000 annual engineering graduates in 2006 will increase by almost 100,000 with over 600,000 annual graduates in subsequent years. Direct employment reached almost 1.3 million at the end of 2006. IT Sector growth is projected at 35% in 2007.
A total of 12 states and 17 cities are evaluated in detail like never done before. Rising costs and local capacity constraints, the report finds, are driving companies to Tier 2 cities such as Chennai (Madras) Hyderabad and Puna (Poona) and Tier 3 cities such as Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mysore and Ahmedabad. The six leading Tier 1 and 2 cities generate 95% of current IT revenues.
The report offers 18 detailed, interrelated figures and tables, and service supplier assessment, supported by fresh and insightful analysis provided by Waagstein analysts on the ground in India. The study is a must-read for executives and corporate buyers planning an Indian entry or expansion strategy. India has over 3,000 IT service providers, with its 12 largest service providers generating almost US$11 billion in 2006 revenues and employing over 275,000 workers.
India’s high growth rate has lead to problems with inadequate public infrastructure, salary inflation and high attrition rates in major tier one cities. This increases the attractiveness of Tier 2 and Tier 3 tier cities where quality of life, lower wages and other costs are increasingly attractive. The report evaluates fourteen Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities and identifies the most attractive alternatives.

| | 2007-03-10 New report: Business IT Cost Drivers 2007 |
| | While there are many cost control methods available, the resources of the company are not infinite and so it is impossible to implement them all. In order to make the best choice of method, it is important to make a comprehensive evaluation of what works both in general but also within the own organisation with its unique cost driver environment.
Waagstein Research’s report Business IT Cost Drivers 2007 maps out Nordic companies awareness of and attitudes to IT costs drivers and cost control methods. This entails looking at what level of understanding of IT cost drivers in the business operations they have, how they rank these and what cost control measures they perceive to be the most effective as well as to what extent they use them. |

| | 2006-11-30 New report: Nordic IT Costs & Investments 2006/2007 |
| | The Nordic countries are currently experiencing a period of strong economic conditions. This is bound to have a strong effect on their IT spending patterns. While better market conditions usually lead to a greater willingness to invest in information technology, the question is whether the IT costs will be allowed to increase at the same or higher rate than the turnover and staffing levels. It is also interesting to know what areas receive the most funding and how cost increases for staff and consultants affect IT budgets.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic IT Costs & Investments 2006/2007 maps out the IT costs and investments of Nordic companies in 2006 and 2007. In the report the IT costs levels as well as the allocation of spending is described and analysed. Both the allocation on invested resources (hardware, software, personnel etc.) and on obtained functions (infrastructure, ERP etc.) is presented. Furthermore, a ranking of Nordic companies’ investment priorities is presented. In addition, the report looks at what cost-saving opportunities the companies perceive there to exist and how large the potential savings are. |

| | 2006-10-30 New report: Nordic IT Organisation 2006 - Effective Governance Models |
| | The strategic choices a company or organisation makes concerning the IT governance structure of their IT function is a key determinant of the success of the IT function in providing value to the business/operations. This is because those choices create the environment in which the IT function must operate. With the wrong strategic decisions on IT governance, e.g. what IT funding model to use, even a very competent IT management will have to struggle to succeed in supporting the business/organisation with competitive services and prices.
There is no one IT governance model which fits all. What model is right for the individual company/organisation depends on how it is structured and what overall goals it has. For example, a company that has highly decentralised business operations might not be able to succeed in deploying a highly centralised IT operations model.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic IT Organisation 2006 – Effective Governance Models maps out what key decisions Nordic companies and organisations’ have made concerning the governance of their IT organisation. This entails looking at what IT funding models they have chosen, the methods for allocation of decision rights on IT strategy they are using and how successful the methods and models they have chosen have been in meeting key objectives. |

| | 2006-09-10 New Report: Nordic Outsourcing 2006 - Measuring Outsourcing Performance |
| | Outsourcing companies claim that by outsourcing, an organisation can reduce costs and enhance flexibility with maintained or improved quality of service. The satisfaction with reaching these benefits is however varying. Some clients claim to have experienced higher costs and/or reduced satisfaction among its end-users and business/organisation management while others feel outsourcing has exceeded their expectations. However, many companies and organisations, both those that claim to be satisfied and those who claim to be disappointed, base their view on often subjective impressions instead of objective data.
Waagstein Research’s report Nordic Outsourcing 2006 – Measuring Outsourcing Performance maps out Nordic companies and organisations’ measurement of their outsourcing suppliers’ performance. This entails looking at what they measure, how they measure and how successful various methods have been in helping the organisation to achieve its IT goals.

| | 2005-01-20 New report: Nordic IT Sourcing India 2005 |
| | The IT units of most Nordic companies and organisations have been under continuous pressure to reduce or maintain the size of IT costs for several years and will most likely continue to be so during the foreseeable future. At the same time they are asked to deliver more value to their organisations. A tried solution has been to outsource operations and development to outside suppliers. Until now most of this has been to suppliers in the Nordics. However, as companies in other parts of the developed world, most notably the United States, are sourcing IT services in low-cost countries on an ever greater scale, European and Nordic companies will be forced to follow suit in order to stay competitive.
There are a number of countries and regions that have positioned themselves as centres for offshore IT services, most notably India, China, South East Asia and Eastern Europe. Among these India stands out thanks to a huge pool of English-speaking, well-educated and experienced IT professionals. Also, the long experience of many Indian IT services suppliers in delivering offshore services help reduce the inherent risks and transaction costs in purchasing offshore services.
